Why They Cried edition by Jim Hanas Literature Fiction eBooks

Whether it's a report from the real Cannes or a young couple discovering that reading Jacques Derrida aloud can lull their child to sleep, Jim Hanas finds the strange in the everyday and the everyday in the strange. Why They Cried answers its own question and the answer is funnier than you think.
Why They Cried edition by Jim Hanas Literature Fiction eBooks
Author Jim Hana's of "Why They Cried" writes this unique short story collection in a surreal/abstract way suggesting a dead-pan humor style or theme. This allows the reader to draw their own conclusions and meaning about what has or hasn't transpired in each story. In the first story, the confused narrator tries his best to hold his relationship together with the volatile and elusive "Miss Tennessee", he seems to love and care for her dog as much as he cares for her, and is forced to make a decision concerning their relationship. In "Pangaea": Jeanie knows she must quit her job with a large cosmetic's firm, her co-workers are whispering behind her back, and passing judgment. "Someone" in the company is having an affair with a married man. "The Arab Bank": finds 17 year old Marco who is the son of a former prostitute, living in poverty, approached by a Algerian bodyguard who hired him "unofficially" to work. His new job included escorting a beautiful prostitute "Sylvie" to service her customers, and other odd jobs where bad unexpected things begin to happen. "The Audubon Society" is a touching story where the narrator goes to great lengths to protect his emotionally fragile live-in girlfriend "Very". They rescue a pigeon from the roadside, wanting very much for the bird to survive. The narrator makes a startling discovery when he checked on the bird, he left on the roof of their house, while "Very" was napping.
"The Cryer": is a story that inspired the book, and the compelling "eye catching" cover art that a reader can't miss. This story about an actor, that seems to avoid life responsibilities by not answering his cell and tuning out with mind altering drugs. He is the prize won at a charity auction, well known for his ability to cry at will. "People Unlike Airplanes": An Airbus 320 with Firebird Airlines crashes in Grand Junction, CO, all 122 crew members and passengers perish. The narrator discusses the flight in great detail, he was on it after all, or was he? Very Surreal. "You Can't Touch This": is about a 16 year old germa-phobe, that works as a custodian in a pediatric clinic, who must attempt to deal with his obsessive-compulsive fears. My favorite story was easier to follow, "The Guest": about a young married couple Kent and Deana, with an infant daughter, who agree to let their friend Todd visit and stay with them for a few days. At first the visit went well, until Todd stayed in his room without leaving it, or speaking to them for days. What is happening? Was Todd OK? Depressed? Good suspense!

Why They Cried edition by Jim Hanas Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This is a terrific collection of short stories! A well-written, witty, and insightful look at modern relationships. And then Hanas' story The Cryerer defies all categories and is among the best short stories I've read. Bravo! More! More!
I loved all the characters in "Why They Cried", for the loving way they were written and the wonderful, quirky details that make them come alive. In the first story, "Miss Tennessee", a (human) couple's relationship comes across partially by the way they project their feelings onto their dog. Another couple's relationship is reflected in the way they deal with finding an injured bird. It comes down to this they are really well written and enjoyable to read.
Mr Hanas is a terrific writer with a huge heart and a very wicked brain. I know why they cried now, and if you read this book—and you must—you will, too.
Fresh, Insightful, humorous, well written, offbeat. Looking forward to reading more from this author soon! Interesting on so many levels.
I was lost-the title wasn't enough of a clue of what to expect and I still don't understand what tied any of the stories together. Kind of a cool concept; just not enough depth or heft,
A very impressive collection of stories by Mr. Hanas. I was particularly taken by The Cryerer, which has the makings of a classic and, to me, reads like a more centered Donald Barthelme. Hanas displays his range with convincing portraits of passive aggressive lovers in the opening story, Miss Tennessee; the lowlife beneath the glamour of Cannes in The Arab Bank, and the sad sack talent of the Cryerer. Hanas writes in a crisp, often spare prose that is custom-suited to each tale, and moves effortlessly along towards the answers to why they cried. Highly recommended.
Clever, unique and smart short stories. Each story kept me wanting to read the next. This is a great book for readers with short periods of time available to read daily.
